Life is Sweeter When You Slow Down

Old fashioned ribbon candy reminds me of simpler times, when life moved at a slower pace.

As a child of the 70’s, I recall people enjoying the sweetness of each day, especially during the holidays. Every December, friends or relatives would stop by unannounced at my grandparents’ home, bearing tins of glistening ribbon candy, much to my delight. I was taught to savor the delicate sweets, as they chatted, usually over a mug of eggnog. Many of those friends didn’t have any grandchildren and looked forward to visiting my grandparents, who had over a dozen of us to spread holiday cheer. I loved listening to their stories, as I snuck another piece of shiny ribbon candy, which I was sure came straight from the North Pole. Visions of ribbon candy still dance in my head each Christmas, along with fond memories from my grandparents’ kitchen. I think I will order tins of ribbon candy this year, in honor of my grandparents, and make deliveries to some elderly folks in need of a little sweetness in their life.

Today, everything swirls around us so fast, being present in the journey and joys of life may be challenging, especially during the holidays.

Technology has taken over our time and our minds when it comes to gift giving. Between “Black Friday” and “Cyber Monday” it’s easy to get lost in the noise around us and forget what truly matters. When life feels like it’s happening at a dizzying pace, recognize that as a sign. Perhaps it’s time to slow down, catch your breath, and enjoy the sweetness of each moment.

Create space for more magical moments, by giving the gift of time to those you love, rather than purchasing more things.

Here are a few life coaching tips to guide you to living the sweet life, by slowing down this holiday season.

  • Be present-Carve out quiet time daily for reflection, journaling and reconnecting with loved ones.

  • Be patient-Take a deep breathe when things get hectic and look for ways to turn obstacles into opportunities.

  • Be joyful-Recognize the sweetness and delight in each moment, even amidst the chaos.

  • Be kind-Choose kindness by nurturing your neighbor and loving the unlovable.
