The Dog and Duck, Afterward

So much has changed, since our whirlwind day in London. Oh, to go back to the way things were before COVID, lockdowns and riots.

Laura and I corresponded recently and she said, “your story cast me back to a wonderful afternoon where we all spent our time chatting and laughing. Henry would have loved the piece and it definitely would have made him smile.”

Now, more than ever, we hold on tight to such memories.  We yearn for the day when we meet a new friend and can see the smiles that are currently hidden under our masks. The day will come.

For now the world waits. London is on lockdown again indefinitely, due to COVID. Restaurants are only able to offer takeout and the Soho district has been hit particularly hard. As coronavirus vaccines are being rolled out, there is hope for a return to normalcy.

Once restrictions are lifted, the streets of London will be buzzing with night life again. When that time comes, I highly recommend you pop into a tiny British pub called, The Dog and Duck. You never know who you might meet.

London Links:

Eat

The Dog and Duck

Historic English pub famous for its cask ales, ornate interior, and literary connections. Classic English kitchen menu known for its savory pies, fish and chips. Vegans won’t be disappointed with the Wheatberry, Apple and Cranberry Salad, which I recreated at home as my signature Wheat Berry Salad.

Bar Italia

Classic Soho vibe. Perfect place to people-watch over an espresso or Prosecco and cannoli. British pop band Pulp even penned a song in honor of this London institution. It’s been a haven for movie stars and musicians like Dave Stewart, who once said, “This coffee shop is very small, but what goes on there is as big as the world.”

Brasserie Zedel

A French staple in Soho. Go for afternoon tea and try the quiche or hit the late-night speakeasy and indulge in the steak and frites. Float your cares away in the chocolate mousse with a glass of champagne. My menu from that day has become a treasured souvenir which is framed and hanging in our home!

Ceviche

We discovered this Peruvian gem another day, and were hooked immediately! Be sure to try the Pisco sours, fresh ceviches and lamb skewers. Consider supporting Ceviche Family restaurants now by purchasing their award-winning cookbook, Ceviche: Peruvian Kitchen

Stay:

The Kensington Hotel

We loved it for the romantic ambiance, especially the bar and restaurant. Inventive cocktails and gourmet breakfasts were our favorites. The charming neighborhood is full of quaint pubs, a great location for sightseeing, and close to the airport.

So many choices, so little time. For us, it was all about strolling the cobblestone streets and taking in the sights. We only had a few days there, but we managed to squeeze in several historic landmarks, lots of dining, and a show. Next time-more museums!
